UK’s participation in the 60th Munich security conference: World leaders, including the UK, gathered at the “Davos of Defense” from February 16 to 18, the 60th Munich Security Conference.

About 60 heads of state & 85 government officials met for three days to discuss current & future global security issues.

What is the Munich Security Conference

It’s an annual meeting on international security policy. It is a unique global forum for the global elite to discuss security policy. Also, it is one of the few global forums where many government representatives, and adversaries come together in a tiny space. 

Location of the Munich Security Conference

Most officials who attended the 60th MSC did so in the Hotel Bayerischer Hof, Munich, Germany. Munich is one of Germany’s largest cities, buried deep in Bavaria in the country’s south.

The guest list included heads of state, government leaders, foreign ministers, and defense ministers.  Others include representatives from international organizations, media, business leaders, and intelligence officials worldwide.

Therefore, the UK high profile attendee was David Cameron, UK Foreign Secretary. Also, other attendees were Sir Keir Starmer, Leader of the Opposition; John Healey, the shadow defence secretary; and David Lammy, shadow foreign secretary.

Chairman of the 60th Munich Security Conference

Since the beginning of 2022, Ambassador Christoph Heusgen has been the MSC’s chairman. From 2005, the diplomat was former German Chancellor Angela Merkel‘s foreign & security policy adviser. Also, between 2017 and 2021, he was the German ambassador to the United Nations. He succeeded Wolfgang Ischinger, who had been the conference chairman since 2008. Furthermore, he had previously been Germany’s ambassador in Washington and London. 

When did the Security Conference first take place

The Munich Security Conference was established in 1963. It was initially called “Internationale Wehrkunde-Begegnung,” which roughly translates as “international meeting for defense experts.” The founding fathers were Ewald von Kleist and Edward Teller. 

Issues Discussed During the Conference

Front and center were the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and the Middle East turmoil due to the Israel-Hamas war.

Also, the growing tensions in the Indo-Pacific, NATO expansion, and the potential return of Donald Trump to the White House were examined during the forum.

The conference coincided with the beginning of Operation Steadfast Defender, the largest military exercise in Europe since the Cold War. The exercise will test NATO’s ability to halt a hypothetical Russian invasion.

The Importance of UK’s Participation in the 60th Munich Security Conference

The UK has long been a key player in international security efforts. Thus, its participation in the Munich Security Conference further solidifies its commitment to managing global challenges. 

By engaging with other countries and sharing its expertise, the UK can contribute to shaping effective security policies and strategies.

Participating in the conference allows the UK to strengthen its relationships with its European partners. For instance, despite Brexit, the UK remains a vital security ally for Europe.

Regarding Ukraine, the UK, along with the US, Germany, pledged to continue supporting the Ukrainian war effort against Russia. The support will involve weapons delivery like missiles and tanks.

On NATO, the UK supports the inclusion of Sweden into the alliance. Already, the British government spends roughly 2% of its GDP on its military, NATO’s defence spending requirement. Given that NATO-Russia war may occur in the future, the UK want to boost the British Army’s standing force to 120,000 soldiers by 2027.

Furthermore, the UK is partaking in NATO’s Steadfast Defender 24. It is a NATO military exercise that will take place throughout the Trans-Atlantic region from February to May 2024. It will be used to rehearse a response if Russia invades the Baltic states. The troop’s strength is over 90,000 soldiers. The UK will contribute 20,000 troops for the exercise.
